The drive home was silent. Still charged, but now with a different explosive. Did Vince have something planned for Raymond? And if so, should I stop it, or just sit back and let my problem disappear, as if over the side of a cliff?

We pulled up to the curb in front of my house. Vince didn’t ask for me to go with him anywhere else, and I didn’t ask him in.

I thanked him for showing me Red Rock, he nodded, and I turned to get out of his car. He put a hand on my arm to stop me. “I’ll call you tomorrow,” he said.

“Okay.”

He kept his hand on my arm “So, you’ll go?” He paused, probably trying to figure out how to phrase what he wanted to ask in a way that could never be incriminating in case his car was bugged. “You think you’ll be out of town?”

“Yes?”

“And you’re going alone?”

I took a deep breath, looked at his handsome face. “I’m not sure yet.”

I didn’t know for sure if he suspected whom I’d turn to next. Well, yes, from the look in his eyes I guess he did. I was actually thankful for his paranoia of being bugged so he didn’t ask me.

He let go of my arm and I left the car. Walking up the drive, I realized I’d just given Vince more incentive for wanting me off the cliff.
